Aguardiente (or Guaro which is more familiar) is the most popular brandy from Colombia.
This anise-flavored spirit drink, made from sugarcane, is called fire-water. The sugar-containing varieties, taste more like melted licorice.
Each province in Colombia retains the rights to produce aguardiente and each province prefers its own aguardiente, although some brands have achieved such a reputation that goes beyond the borders of the country, w. z. Antioqueño (produced in the Medellín region), Blanco del Valle, etc.
Aguardiente comes in two main varieties: con Azúcar (with sugar) or sin Azúcar (without). Guaro drinkers claim that the first variety is only for teens who do not like hard drinks. Many Colombians insist on drinking the sugar-free version because it is not supposed to cause hangovers.
