Yerba mate is used to make mate tea. If the drink is served cold, it is called tereré. Mate tea is traditionally consumed in South America, but is also popular in Syria and Lebanon.
Yerba Mate means mate herb, whereby the word mate originally comes from the word mati, a complex word with several meanings from the Quechua language. Mati means, among other things, "container for a drink", "infusion of an herb" and "calabash". The infusion is drunk from a container (typically a calabash) that is filled up to three quarters with dry leaves (and stems) of the mate plant. The leaves are infused with water at a temperature of 70-80 ° C.
The calabash is also called Guampa, Porongo or Cuia, depending on the country. You drink through a special metal straw (Bombilla in Spanish, Bomba in Portuguese). The calabash is handed over and refilled from one person to another (usually in the seat circle).
